"Rabbit Hole" Play Review
Fiction Into Film
14 October“Rabbit Hole”
The play Saturday October 9, 2010 was a success. I was rather surprised because it was so simple and it was the type of play where they read some of the script. The play “Rabbit Hole” was by David Lindsay-Abaire. The four main characters were Howie, Becca, Izzy and Nat of course with the exception of the young boy who accidentally hit Becca and Howie’s child Danny. It went exceptionally well. The director originally for the play was directed by Daniel Sullivan. In this play though, Grace Austin directed Amanda Barkley, Holly and the other actors in the play. Each gave a 100% effort and the illustrations of the role they played were well.
The set design consisted of a well maintained kitchen with black cabinets and a black fridge/refrigerator. The refrigerator was full of goodies that Becca made. There was a couch, lamp and t.v. on the opposite end of the stage well maintained and kept. In the play, part of the props were Danny’s toys that Becca decided to get rid of because they reminded her of him and thinks that the house should be sold to get rid of the memory. Clothes were also part of the prop. Becca got her laundry and folded it. There is also a stereo where music was played.
Costumes were normal dress. Howie came home to his wife Becca in business attire. Becca and Izzy and Nat wore regular everyday clothes. At night the play showed Becca in her night clothes reading a letter that had a story dedicated to Danny from the boy who accidentally hit him when he ran into the street. Each of the characters had a very good idea of their role and understood the feeling and emotions that were supposed to be associated with their role as well.
The special effects consisted of music and dimmed lighting when there was a change from scene to scene. They had a very good choice of music. Lighting focused on the characters change or switch in role. The light shined from one actor to another when the attention changed to a different actor. Music also played during intermissions.
The overall performance was a brilliant play about a family that lost their son. One day Becca had to run in to answer the phone when her son Danny was out in the yard. Boys like dogs so they follow dogs. The dog ran into the street and Danny followed. Danny got hit by a young teenage driver who couldn’t stop in time. Becca and Howie both live in deep regrets even though it wasn’t their fault whatsoever. Becca is haunted by Danny’s memory because her life consist of the day to day living in the same old house that he grew up in before he got killed. Becca insists they get rid of the house and sell it. Howie supports their decision and starts to put it up for sale and allow shows of the home. Events consisted of Izzy’s birthday and fights that went on that were arguments between Becca and Howie. Becca accidentally recorded over Danny’s tape and Howie got upset because it was the only tape they had of him. They also chose to change his room and get rid of his toys as they move on. There was a nice and simple ending were Becca asks, “What do we do now?” as she holds Howie’s hands after much triumph in overcoming their battles as a young couple. Becca has trouble dealing with her feelings and emotions at first over the loss of her son and Howie is angry as well. Howie recommend therapy and then quits when Izzy, Becca’s sister finds him spending time with another woman because Becca is sometimes unbearable. Howie then quits therapy. Eventually in the end they grow closer together because of the loss of their son wondering what’s next.
A Continuation For A Rose For Emily
Continuation of a Rose For Emily
Emily Grierson dies. A gray hair is found on the pillow and even though the story doesn’t say what Emily did with the Arsenic we can conclude that she killed Homer, her first and final suiter. It’s a year later from the funeral and the other dead body is found. The presence of the bodies that once accompanies the home of Emily Grierson lingers.
A year later
Although the smell of the dead bodies and dust lingered in the home it is now gone. A spirit body wanders and a young Homer’s son lives in the house that was left behind in the will of Emily. In another world Homer the suiter is resurrected.
Theme: A younger Homer is trapped inside the house of Emily Grierson. Emily’s spirit body thinks that he is the Homer she loved. He is indeed Homer, but, Homer Jr. In another world God resurrected the life of Homer Sr. the suiter and he speaks for the events happening to Homer Jr. and Fantasia.
Homer Jr. finds a girlfriend that he intends to be his wife. Suddenly, a ghost (spirit body) of Emily appears. Homer Jr. girlfriend is Fantasia.
Homer Jr: HOLY SHITOCKI MUSHROOMS! AAAHHH! I SWORE I JUST SAW A FIGURE FANTASIA! I hope it’s..just me.
The spirit body of Emily is in a white dress.
Emily spirit: whispers “Homer…”
God resurrected Homer Sr. because he was innocently killed.
Homer Jr: I don’t think I should have moved into this house now. I’m seeing the ghost of Emily Grierson Fantasia. Do you see her? I have a spirit body stalker. Great! Just when I thought I figured things out.
Homer Sr. in another world is living it up and telling the normal jokes he always told in town with his friends.
Homer Sr. : Yeah! God told me not to trust anybody named Emily when I saw the light before I died.
Fantasia: You can’t leave spirits like that push you away. They are only a part of your imagination.
Homer Jr: Fantasia, why don’t you believe me?
Fantasia: Of course I do Homer! But it’s nonsense to start your life over isn’t it?
Homer Jr: I don’t know Fantasia, I have been so beside myself every since my father died. The last place he went was to this house and when we found Emily dead there was a gray hair on her pillow. I guess it could have been hers. I just wish I didn’t feel so lost and beside myself over my father’s death. I wish I knew what happened.
Fantasia: I don’t know why her spirit body would haunt you. We have to figure out what it wants.
Homer Jr: I agree Fantasia, I just don’t know if its safe.
Emily’s spirit body: (whispers) Homer
Fantasia: I don’t know there are a lot of research about things like this, there just isn’t a lot of direct answers.
Homer Jr. I know spirit bodies can be good or bad. Angelic or Demonistic. I’m kind of afraid but I think there is a reason for her being here.
Fantasia: I read a book like that before but I don’t think all are in your best interest.
Homer Jr: I just wish I knew why she put me in her will. Why did sh include me, I don’t think I’ll ever know!
Emily’s Spirit Body: (whispers) Homer…
Suddenly the door slams and a knife is taken out of the kitchen drawer.
Fantasia: Is there somebody there Homer?
Homer Jr: Fantasia we can’t tell anybody about this or they’ll put us in straight-jackets for sure.
Fantasia: Homer, will it be alright?
Homer Jr: I’m sure it will be alright Fantasia.
Fantasia: So what do we do?
Homer Jr: We figure out what it wants.
Fantasia: You know what! I noticed a Library. Let’s do some research.
Homer Jr: I forgot about that.
Homer Sr: Yeah! That old Emily Grierson killed me with Arsenic God said. I knew I shouldn’t have trusted her.
Back to Emily’s house.
Suddenly Fantasia falls and hits her head.
Homer Jr: Fantasia! Are you alright?
Fantasia: Who…who are you?
Homer Jr: Why, don’t you know me Fantasia?
Fantasia: Something tripped me…that’s all I remember.
Homer Jr: Come with me to the Library.
Fantasia: Ok.
Homer: Wow! I found this diary of old Emily Grierson, come look Fantasia!
Fantasia: Oh my! Look what it says…
Homer Jr. reads: I went to buy a ring today then I bought some Arsenic. I wasn’t about to tell the pharmacist what for. I’m about to keep my first and final suiter. Homer is coming over. Oh how I love everything about him.
Homer Jr: So what does this mean? Was Emily crazy? What did she do with the Arsenic?
Fantasia: I suppose we’ll never find out if it doesn’t say.
Suddenly the knife from the kitchen door is floating mid-air and moving toward Fantasia.
Screams suddenly in a dark night.
Fantasia: AaAaAaAAAH!
Homer: Fantasia run!
Fantasia runst to another room and locks the door. There is a clanking of a knife against the door because it wouldn’t pass through. Suddenly the ghost of Emily appears on the other side.
Homer and Fantasia yell back and forth through the door.
Homer: Fantasia are you alright? For crying out loud!
Fantaisa: I’m fine Homer!
Emily’s spirit body is in the room w/ Fantasia.
Emily: You stole Homer!...You shalt die!
Fantasia: Uh, Homer…You may not want to hear this..Emily’s ghost is obsessed with you.
Homer: Say what?
Suddenly the clanking knife came from the bedroom door where Fantasia was trapped. It started toward Homer Jr. and a yell went out.
Homer Jr: Help! Help!
Homer runs to the other bedroom door and locked it. All he could hear was a clanking knife. He is in the bedroom next to Fantasia’s room.
Fantaisa: Homer are you alright?
Homer: Yeah Fantasia! I’m just fine.
Fantasia: What are we going to do! We’re trapped!
Suddenly Emily’s spirit body appears in a white dress in Homer’s bedroom.
Emily: Homer, you betrayed me. I loved you and for what?
Fantasia: Homer we have to start out of these bedrooms. On the count of 3 run!
Fantasia: 1, 2, 3 AaaaAAAaahhHHH!
Fantasia runs after opening the door. Screams. Homer doesn’t come out right away.
Fantasia is stabbed.
Homer: Fantasia!
Homer runs out of room. Screams.
Homer: AAAaAAAahHHH!
Homer is stabbed.
Homer and Fantasia fall to the ground. Homer hobbles over to Fantasia, falls on her and kisses her.
Homer: It’s all over now Fantasia. I love you!
Emily: Homer you betrayed me!
Emily’s spirit body finally gets what she wants.
Homer Sr: That’s not all folds and kids remember the morale of the life of Romeo and Juliet.
Morale: Sometimes when people see spirit bodies they see them for a purpose. God’s spirit bodies are angels but some spirit bodies are demons. It has been said in the past that they can portray people while really having a wicked disposition and not close to being good at all. Some say they have saw angels. Ironically though, the Bible does say that each spirit body has a purpose. The question is, if there were a spirit body is it representing the good or bad fate toward the individual in which it appears. Also, another morale would be that sometimes you have to die for love. This isn’t normal but it is to be expected in some situations. The question is,…what would you do?....
Film Reviews Are Candid
Reviews are Candid
Each of the films we watched had many effective use of techniques. Each director used their own special techniques that added to the professionalism of the movie. First, types of shots and angles are considered. Second, lighting was the next thing used. Types of lighting that can be used is hard or soft. Thirdly, another effect is music. Each type of music playing possibly having a purpose.
The types of shots for the Maltese Falcon included close-ups when the characters are introduced into the plot. There are medium close-ups to close ups. There are 180 and 360 degree shots when something important happens to one of the characters and their was about a 45 degree angle when Thursby was shot. Some of the shots are stationary when there isn’t importance on catching a character rival. In contrast, when a character rival happens such as the Gutman and the wild apprentices of his there are moving angles that show the character interaction well. There is a rarity of bright lighting and much of it is dark. Therefore, much of it is Film Noir. There is background music to put emphasis on the moments of betrayal and astonishment of alterior motives. There is a type of Jazz and a more frolicy music that is used whenever there is character interaction and between scene surprises. I think the purpose is to bring surprise to the viewer and a sense of setting. This movie had quite the twise where Sam Spade figured out that Iva was the one that really set up Thursby to be killed. Sam turns her in and makes sure that any affair with her is over and almost knows exactly from the beginning when he quotedly says, “And Effie, keep her away from me.”
The Glass Menagerie was a magnificent film within itself. I loved how the glass collection was used to show the feminine side of Laura. I also like how the characters are all stuck in a menagerie of Joe’s memories. I feel really bad for Tom because he is left with the responsibility of his family and isn’t treated very well by his mother who tends to hark easily. The use of camera in the Glass Menagerie is a medium close up to a close up often on Laura and a Long shot on the mature Tom and on the argument and daily events of the house. This gives the audience an overall understanding of how each of their lives are and how they add up to the plot and characterization that is unveiled. There is a medium close-up probably on Laura and Joe dancing. There are a lot of interior shots that are used. Laura loves Joe and is soon discouraged when she finds out he has a fiancĂ©. The lighting throughout the house is mostly soft leaving a soft and warm touch to the recall of the house that Tom recalls as tears well in his eyes as he relays his flashback of memories. The music is sort of classical. The purpose of the club music across the street was to set a mood for the love that Joe and Laura share. Laura having a slight disability and dropping out of business school is encouraged to look for love in marriage by her mother.
The Yellow Wallpaper was quite the interesting movie. I think it gave me a scare. I look at it and it makes me afraid to get married because of how bad male domination can really be. I realize it isn’t really the same now, but, to be expected to do nothing like back then really shows how unequally women were treated back in that time. There are a lot of extreme close-ups in this movie. I felt really bad when she decided to take control of herself and went crazy somehow giving her mind a symbolic release of her trapped feelings and far out-of-reach dreams. It’s truly ironic because she is finally free but not in a good state. Most of the shots in this movie I would categorize as stationary except for the very last shot where she crawls across the floor over her faint husband, that is moving. The lighting is bright and it takes place from day-to-day of a house back around the time of the Victorian Age where the women’s duties were greatly emphasized and they had less power. I would say the lighting is hard in scenes from day-to-day life so the audience can truly observe the actions of the woman who has an illness. Then I think they use soft lighting to personalize the touch of her writing in her room. I think there is a combination of both to make the film more effective. I can definitely say this movie left me bewildered and thinking twice about life. The music was likely something old and fitting. I don’t quite remember music as much in this movie. I payed attention to what was happening more.
